Make Bishop a destination on the way to your destination!

Bishop is not only the gateway to the northeastern Sierras, but it should also be a scheduled stop.

For decades we high-tailed it through Bishop on the way to Mammoth, Yosemite eastern entrance, or Lake Tahoe. A friend of mine suggested we hike in the eastern Sierras with Bishop as our home base. Ever since this suggestion, we visit Bishop at least once, but usually twice per year.

There are secret treasures if you drive on nearly any road from US 395 towards the mountains. Pristine lakes, high granite cliffs and peaks, patches of snow you that should have long melted, and so many wonders.

The Sierras side is glamorous and beautiful, but there are so many other activities in town, like the city park and Railroad Museum. The eastern side of 395 also features Bristlecone ancient forest, which are the oldest living [things] on earth. Visit the Bishop Information Center across from Schat's Bakery. They will have you connected. There are too many spectacular stories and sights to short change yourself, and with the help that's always there, they know it all (in a good way).

Go 1980-style and stay in an off-brand motel, or book online. Either way, you need to experience Bishop for all it's small-town beauty and wonder. Finally, Erik Schat's Bakery is a must visit. Think of it, and they got it. Breads, Danish, macaroons, oh my!

Two months ago I was travelling with my brother through California when in Bishop, we were caught off guard by a sudden Winter Storm warning. We were unsure about how to proceed with our trip but thankfully, we decided to stop by the Bishop Visitor Center. There we received exceptional assistance from one of the staff members.

I want to highlight the outstanding help we received from that very kind and helpful gentleman. He went above and beyond to help us navigate our trip during the storm. We visited him several times, and each time he provided us with invaluable information and support.

He guided us through the best options for continuing our journey safely, suggested alternative routes, recommended us beautiful places and hikes to do while we stayed at Bishop and showed us several useful websites to monitor snow and ice conditions on the roads. His calm demeanor and knowledgeable advice were incredibly reassuring during a stressful time.

Thanks to his exceptional service, we were able to adjust our plans and continue enjoying our trip without unnecessary worry. If you find yourself in Bishop and need assistance, or want any recommendations about what to visit in the area, I highly recommend stopping by the Bishop Visitor Center. The staff, particularly this incredibly helpful man, truly make a difference.

Thank you again for your outstanding help!

This is a great helpful place. I got locked out of my cellphone, with no access to the internet, navigation, etc., and the lady who was working there helped me a lot, let me use the phone to call my provider to unlock my phone and then gave me directions to my home. I had to drive home for 6 hours without navigation and with her help I made it home safely. The great people work there. I think every little town in the wilderness should have such a post like this as a last resort for help when you don’t know what to do and see no emergency reason to call 911. Thank you.

We were in Bishop in January during all the record snow on Martin Luther King Weekend and missed the noon bus to get to Mammoth Lakes. Naively, we thought we could get an Uber without any luck. Joe in the visitors center welcomed us to town and delighted us with stories of town and his experiences over the last 40 years. He called the bus company to ensure a bus was scheduled and then drove us over to the station with all of our baggage (skis and all)!! It was incredibly kind and over and beyond our expectations. If you are looking for souvenirs, look no further than this visit center as it’s curated so well. We got the best coffee cups there, so thankful for the kindness and knowledge that Joe shared with us!

The information guy was amazing. Has answers for everybody. When we stopped in June it seemed like the AC was not working, very stuffy. I hope it has been fixed for everybody's sake.
